OVERVIEW: The Hospital Aid has primary responsibility for meeting the everyday needs of patients in the hospital and for performing all hospital maintenance both inside and out. The Hospital Aid must pay attention to detail and maintain high levels of patient care and cleanliness. The Hospital Aid maintains a clean, odor-free kennel and hospital and clean hospital grounds. The Hospital Aid must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and must enjoy working with animals.

SUMMARY: Responsibilities of the Hospital Aid include cleaning and disinfecting cages and runs; laundry; animal care including feeding, watering, and proper identification; animal restraint; food carryout for clients; general hospital maintenance and cleaning; light maintenance of grounds. Performs the following duties personally and coordinates with team members to ensure successful completion of assigned tasks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Scrupulously clean and disinfect cages and runs (inside and out) including removing urine, feces, blood, vomit, hair, litter
  • Keep kennel areas ready for “client inspection” at all times
  • Sort, wash, dry, fold, and store laundry (includes the use of chlorine bleach)
  • Keep grounds and street litter-free: clean outside entrances, clean parking area, and street gutters
  • Keep sidewalks and parking lot free of urine and feces
  • Keep trash area neat and clean
  • Keep the dog food area clean and organized
  • Maintain all cleaning equipment
  • Keep washer and dryer clean and lint-free
  • Take inventory of cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, and cat litter and notify the Inventory Technician or Practice Manager in writing when supplies are low and need to be replaced
  • Prepare cardboard for recycling
  • Perform gardening tasks: weed, trim, spray as needed
  • Clean hospital interior including counters, walls, doors, windows, blinds, floors, ceilings, picture frames, surgery room, bathrooms
  • Clean hospital equipment and furniture including tables, sinks, lamps, and instruments
  • Clean hospital exterior including windows and patio
  • Keep the entire hospital and grounds odor-free and with a “well-scrubbed” look
  • Perform other relevant maintenance tasks as needed or assigned
  • Notify the Practice Manager in writing of any needed maintenance

Animal Care

  • Provide compassionate care!
  • Maintain accurate identification of all animals at all times.
  • Observe and follow specific directions regarding the administration of food and water.
  • Move animals safely and gently using the proper restraint techniques and protecting both self and animal. Learn how to do this without needing assistance from another staff member.
  • Make sure all animals have a clean supply of fresh water at all times unless instructed otherwise by one of the technicians, or doctor, or noted on the cage tag.
  • Make sure all animals have a clean, dry cage at all times. Change bedding and litter boxes as needed.
  • Make sure all animals are clean and dry at all times and ready to be released at a moment’s notice.
  • Observe all animals and notify the doctor or technician of any abnormal behavior (eating, vocalizing, bowel movements, drinking, vomiting, bleeding, sneezing) or any other unusual behavior).
  • Take incoming animals to appropriate areas as directed by the technician.
  • Prepare animals for discharge (brush, check for cleanliness) as directed by the technician.
  • Keep “kitchen” neat and clean and dishes washed.
  • Assist the doctor(s) and technician(s) with animal restraint as needed.
  • Love the pets! Talk to them.
  • Perform other relevant animal care tasks as needed or assigned.


  • Assist clients to and from cars with dog/cat food and/or pets.
  • Use computer time clock function when clocking in and out from work shift.
  • Complete appropriate Duties Check Sheets and give to Practice Manager as instructed on each check sheet.
  • Answer phone lines if needed. Write messages as needed. Contact the Practice Manager or appropriate doctor as needed.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or GED; and over one year up to and including three years of related experience and/or training within a fast-paced environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience providing exemplary customer service is required. Prior experience in an Animal Hospital is strongly preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS EXPERIENCE: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS EXPERIENCE: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic knowledge of: Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook Communication Management software [or Gmail], Word, and Excel. Experience with Internet usage, PC and/or MAC, and Windows.

  • Ability to handle cats and dogs including those who are fearful, threatening, in pain, or ill.
  • Ability to recognize potential danger and know how to protect self and animal
  • Ability to recognize deviations from normal behavior in hospitalized and boarded pets (changes in behavior, eating, drinking, defecating, recovery from surgery)
  • Consistency and accuracy in identifying pets, some of whom look identical (black cats, Golden Retrievers, Yellow Labrador Retrievers, etc.)
  • Have high degree of accuracy in reading and following instructions
  • Have high degree of common sense in monitoring hospitalized and boarding pets
  • Knowledge of different disinfectants and the appropriate use of each (or the ability to learn this)
  • Breed recognition [dogs and cats] (or the ability to learn this)
  • Ability to meet and interact well with clients (for food carryout and pet assistance)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with clients and team members
  • Knowledge of animal restraint techniques (or ability to learn this)
  • Ability to understand and comply with CAL-OSHA safety standards
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or, in some cases, no supervision
